Wet Clay/Pottery Wheel Studio Membership

Located inside Speckles+Splatter is Wheelscape Pottery (“WP”) a wet clay and pottery wheel studio that’s open for monthly membership. WP offers a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere meant for ceramic lovers of all experience levels. Members need to have previously completed a multi-week pottery wheel course at WP, or have some prior experience in a pottery studio. Members will need to have basic knowledge of studio tools and equipment and must be able to work independently in accordance with WP policies as listed below.

WP membership is not intended for production potters!

Monthly Membership

$200 per month + tax

You get:

Access to pottery wheels and hand building tables during the following open studio hours:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 2pm to 6pm

  • Friday and Saturday 12 noon to 6pm

  • Sunday 12 noon to 4pm

    (Open studio hours subject to change)

Use of all designated studio tools, including slab roller, slab pottery forms, wall mounted and hand held extruders, stamps, throwing tools, etc.

Use of dipping glazes, which includes multiple Cone 6 Mayco, AMACO, and house glazes (brush glazes can also be purchased at WP)

Bisque and glaze firings in electric kilns (in accordance with WP firing schedule)

One 25 pound bag of clay - we stock various clay bodies, and additional clay can be purchased for $1.35 per pound for active members

Access to a 24” x 12” shelf for works in progress

10% off any classes/workshops during an active membership

Wheelscape Pottery Membership Policies

Policies are subject to change - please also refer to posted policies in the studio

General

  1. New members will need to be able to work independently in accordance with WP policies as instructors are not always present to provide guidance.

  2. New members will need to have studio orientation/introduction to studio tools and equipment. Use of equipment is only permitted after WP staff has provided an overview and instructions, including how to manage clean up.

  3. You will be working in a shared studio space where regular classes are held and where other members will also be working at the same time. As a community of ceramic enthusiasts,

  4. All members are responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, respectful, and cooperative environment. Members are expected to:

    • Clean work area and leave them better than they were found

    • After using a pottery wheel, wipe the tray and splash pan, mop the floor around the wheel, and clean the mirror

    • Clean every table surface that was used (wedging table, work tables, etc.)

    • Clean off the glaze table surfaces and mop surrounding floor

    • When finished cleaning, wipe out the sink

    • Dispose of clay water appropriately and in line with posted signs

  5. When utilizing the studio during an on-going session/course/workshop, please be respectful and defer to the instructor and students.

  6. When working with brown and/or speckled clay bodies, it is important to fully clean equipment after you are done to avoid contamination with other light clay bodies that my be in use (for example, canvas on the slab roller, or extruders).

  7. Please do not touch or move any projects that don’t belong to you, and only use the shelf space that you have been assigned to store your projects and tools. If you need to move a piece, please ask studio staff.

  8. Any tools left behind will be deposited in a lost and found bin. WP is not responsible if tools are taken by other members.

  9. WP is not responsible for any personal belongings left in the studio.

  10. Membership is only intended for the individual signing up, and does not extend to family and friends. Under no circumstances are family or friends allowed in the studio area or allowed use any tools, wheels, clay, glazes, etc.

  11. Food and open drinks are not allowed in the studio - members may have drinks in closed containers.

  12. Members are strongly encouraged to use the digital sign up tool to reserve space - a private link will be provided once membership is approved.

  13. Members are not permitted to bring in clay, bisque ware, and/or glazes from outside the studio. Members may also NOT take work home. WP will not fire outside work. All clay must be purchased through studio staff.

Billing, Payment, Termination

  1. The initial monthly membership fee for new members will be pro-rated to reflect the start date as follows: 14 or less calendar days left in the month: $125 / 15-21 calendar days left in the month: $160 / 22 or more calendar days left in the month: $200. Subsequent monthly membership payments must be made by the 1st of each month or before a member next visits. With the exception of the initial monthly membership fee, the full membership fee must be paid for all future months, even if the member chooses to visit the studio again well after the start of a new month. Once paid, membership payments will not be refunded for any reason whatsoever, including lack of use or attendance.

  2. A one time refundable $100 security deposit is also due with the first monthly payment for new members. This deposit will be held by WP and applied toward cleaning fees, misuse, damaged or missing supplies/equipment, or other fees. The full or remaining portion of the deposit will be refunded when a membership is terminated.

  3. Monthly memberships can only be terminated by the member by way of an email to hello@spspart.com at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of a new month. Any items left on a member’s shelf or left behind will be discarded after the final day of membership.

  4. WP management may, in it’s sole discretion, terminate a member’s membership.

Kilns, Glazing, Firing

  1. The studio’s electric kilns are to only be loaded and fired by studio technicians as work is produced to fill them. Members are not permitted to enter the kiln room or to load/unload the kilns.

  2. Members must place pieces to be fired on the designated shelves and in the order communicated by studio staff to ensure that items are fired on a first-come first-fired basis.

  3. Fired pieces will be placed on designated shelves by staff once kilns are unloaded. If pieces are not easily identifiable they will be placed on the No Name shelf. To that end, we strongly recommend that members sign their pieces or take pictures to be able to identify them.

  4. Please leave bottoms of pieces unglazed and sufficiently away from the foot/bottom if you’re layering or using runny glazes. You will be responsible for replacing kiln shelves destroyed by glazing errors. ($100 per shelf). The studio technician reserves the right not to fire a piece, or to use a clay “cookie” in the glaze firing to protect kiln shelves.
